Salisbury International Arts Festival

Salisbury International Arts Festival

The Salisbury International Arts Festival is a wonderful celebration of theatre, dance, film, music, literary and visual arts that takes over the historic city of Salisbury and the surrounding landscape from May 24th to June 9th 2019 (dates vary year by year). The festival started back in 1973 and over one million people have attended the various events of the festival over the years. A new festival director is appointed every four years to keep the festival fresh and exciting.

Some of the stunning locations for events over the years have included:

  • Salisbury Cathedral which provides a perfect venue for a wide variety of arts events both indoors and outdoors and by day and by night
  • Cathedral Close in Salisbury
  • Other key Salisbury locations such as Salisbury Guildhall, Salisbury Playhouse, City Hall and Salisbury Arts Centre, The Wardrobe Museum, Salisbury Museum, Salisbury Library and Leaden Hall all provide a variety of locations hosting different events
  • The Chapel Nightclub
  • Old Wardour Castle which usually hosts a number of outdoor performances in their beautiful grounds
  • Longleat
  • Stonehenge

Some of the themes and topics that have been part of previous Salisbury International Arts Festivals have included:

  • New Zealand culture
  • The sun
  • Barcelona and Catalonia
  • Heritage and culture from Brazil
  • India, spirit and water
  • Latin America
  • Relate and the global community
  • Literature

More recently, the Salisbury International Arts Festival has also produced the Salisbury Food and Drink Festival which takes place in September each year. Salisbury’s Market Square comes to life and is filled with great smells and excitement at over 80 stalls selling a range of local and international foods. There are also plenty of activities to keep families entertained including cheese flinging, veg. throwing, street theatre, live music and cookery demonstrations. Enjoy sampling the fabulous food and perhaps chill out with a beer from the popular beer tent.

The Salisbury International Arts Festival enjoys funding from a number of organisations including the Arts Council for England, National Portfolio Funding, Wiltshire Council and Salisbury City Council.

You can follow their activities via the Salisbury International Arts Festival website.
