Boscombe Down Aviation Collection
The Boscombe Down Aviation Collection is located in Hangar 1 South on the Old Sarum Airfield near to the historical city of Salisbury. You can even fly in to make a visit if you wish, as Old Sarum is the only licenced airfield in Wiltshire! Just make sure you don’t head for the MOD Boscombe Down Airfield as this is some five or six miles away in Amesbury.
Old Sarum Airfield has been the home to some form of military aviation since 1917, so it’s just about to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The site is a designated conservation area and many of the buildings are listed, so the site is rather like a museum in its own right. You really feel like you have stepped back in time as you walk around.
Boscombe Down Aviation Collection is a fantastic collection of military aircraft, weapons and trials equipment along with cockpits and controls that are really hands on exhibits. Children and aviation buffs alike will love the opportunity to sit in the pilot’s seat and play with the controls! There is also a link simulator and you can try your hand at ‘flying’ if you fancy it - the staff there are exceptionally friendly if you have any questions.
Boscombe Down Aviation Collection also has a shop selling aviation bits and pieces and is great for school trips if you’re a teacher and planning a visit. In addition - they also host a range of aviation related events and sales of aviation items and artefacts for those who are interested.
After you have had a look around the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection why not stop off at the Skies Café on the site and watch the comings and goings of the airfield. You might be lucky enough to see some vintage aircraft take off or land. In fact, members of the public can even book a flying experience in a real Tiger Moth (or something a bit newer for the more faint hearted!) if you contact Go Fly - so why not book one for yourself or a loved one!
